This unique camp program provides serious yet fun art instruction over the break and offers elementary students ways to make connections and respond to their own lives and surroundings in new and meaningful ways—and motivation to look within and around themselves with more acute awareness. Experiences in media and process varies from week to week and include drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, mixed-media and printmaking. No two weeks are alike!

Students work together in a small group under the guidance of the instructor to explore distinct concepts, media and methods, and expand upon their vocabulary of materials and techniques. Within each individual workshop, students make a small-scale piece of art based on preliminary experiences/sketches—and leave with a fuller toolbox, feeling empowered by the knowledge and skills gained. The process of discovery has been the most thrilling part of studying art with Shannon at Institute for Visual Arts. I have had my hands on so many different kinds of pens, pencils, markers, inks, paints, pastels, chalk, paper, canvases, fabrics, thread, and found objects than I ever imagined I could incorporate into art. Both my daughter and I have been in the IVA Core Program for years and we’ve never done the same project twice. Each year, we have deepened our understanding of the elements and principles of art and created work that feels expressive and unique to each of us. Shannon has a gift for helping you find your voice in your work - whether you are a seasoned artist or a newbie - and helping you make your work so much better.  In addition to being ongoing students in the Core Program, my daughter and I couldn’t resist also joining the fantastic Session Classes and Workshops offered at IVA in textiles, printmaking and collage. It is such a joy and privilege to unplug from the outside world and make things in this beautiful space.

—Azin Samari, IVA Parent Since 2017 & Student Since 2022

If you have the opportunity for your kids to study at Institute for Visual Arts, don’t hesitate—do it!  My two children have been studying with Shannon for many years and her impact on them has been nothing short of extraordinary. Shannon has not only taught them the techniques needed to be skilled artists, but she has built up their confidence and love of art, and has helped each child find their unique artistic voice.
